It is true of many purchases that you need to get a name brand to get a good product. However, furniture is not one of them. As someone who worked in furniture for several years, I can tell you that the honest truth is that it makes almost no difference in quality. In fact, many of the factories in China that make the top name brand furniture also make furniture that does not have the recognizeable logo. This furniture is often sold for half the price with simply another brand name attached to it; same product, same quality, and without the brand name price tag.
There are occasional exceptions to the rule, so it is important to do your research. Additionally, as always, test out furniture on the floor and pay attention to wear and tear that develops on the show floor. Though yours will not wear as quickly as what is on the floor, you should be aware that if it happens there it will likely happen to your piece eventually. If you do that, though, you really don't need to worry too much about brand name.
