Furniture Myth: You Have to Buy Name Brand to get Quality

It is true of many purchases that you need to get a name brand to get a good product. However, furniture is not one of them. As someone who worked in furniture for several years, I can tell you that the honest truth is that it makes almost no difference in quality. In fact, many of the factories in China that make the top name brand furniture also make furniture that does not have the recognizeable logo. This furniture is often sold for half the price with simply another brand name attached to it; same product, same quality, and without the brand name price tag.

There are occasional exceptions to the rule, so it is important to do your research. Additionally, as always, test out furniture on the floor and pay attention to wear and tear that develops on the show floor. Though yours will not wear as quickly as what is on the floor, you should be aware that if it happens there it will likely happen to your piece eventually. If you do that, though, you really don't need to worry too much about brand name.

Go Wholesale for Wise Furniture Shopping

This is a topic with which, admittedly, I am not all that familiar. However, it is the holiday season, so I thought I would pass it along for those looking to decorate with new furniture as family visits. Additionally, furniture is becoming more popular than ever as a holiday gift. If buying wholesale can help you do that, then I feel like I should make sure it is an available option I cover. So here is an article from another blog. I found it easy to follow and it certainly looks like the information is both good and useful. If anyone out there has any other information about buying furniture or shopping for furniture wholesale, then make sure you let me know. Hope all of this is of some help to you, and happy Turkey Day. The Furniture Guy

Furniture Myth: You have to buy from North Carolina to get the best deals

There was a time when furniture in the United States was essentially anchored in the state of NOrth Carolina. Today, though, that is more a basis of reputation than actual fact. Furniture, as much as anything else, has become a global industry. While a lot of furniture may come through High Point, nearly as much also comes through the west coast and even different East Coast ports. The result is that furniture is cheaper all over the country. I used to get questions all the time about buying from North Carolina. Can you get a great deal buying in or from North Carolina? Of course you can. However, you can also get a great deal if you shop around in Colorado, Michigan, or Kansas. Discount furniture all over the country is shipped in from China, Russia, and South America. That furniture is less expensive and often of high quality. My advice is that you should shop around wherever you are instead of counting on one state or one location to automatically have the best possible deal.

Furniture Myth: Veneers are Bad, Solid Wood is Good

Veneers were often the topic of much more objection than most anything else in the furniture store when I was working the floor. Somewhere along the line, they got a bad reputation. On the other hand, solid wood is often thought of as the holy grail of wood furniture. However, neither of those is completely the truth or completely inaccurate.

Though many people think of veneers as "fake wood" coating, it is actually a great addition to wood furniture that gives it both uniformity and durability in varying climates. Veneers may be and often are made of real wood. What that means is that a hard wood like alder can be used with an Oak or Walnut veneer so that you get a durable piece of furniture with great durability and a reasonable price. Even in the case that your piece is based in solid wood, like oak, your veneer will give it a uniform look that it might not normally get.

As for solid wood, it is heavy and durable. The problem is that it is often hard to find a solid piece of furniture in the shape and grain that it desireable for furniture. Without a veneer, you end up with furniture that lacks uniformity and desireable grain. Additionally, with no veneer, the wood does not expand and contract as easily. That means that when you live somewhere it is dry or where the moisture in the air varies, you could end up with cracked furniture.

The moral of this whole furniture myth is that neither veneer nor solid wood is the total answer. The truth is that what you need is something made of solid woods and veneers that matches the aesthetics you are after. If you do that, you will certianly never go wrong. Then, with proper care, you can get wood furniture that lasts a long time and looks great in your home.

Hope this helps,

Furniture Myth - "Dovetail" is the ONLY good joint in wood furniture

There are many myths about furniture out there. Increasingly, as furniture becomes more affordable, these myths are used to convince consumers to buy certain products. By seperating fact from fiction, you can more effectively shop for furniture as an expert. With that in mind, here is the first in a series of furniture myths I would like to cover: you must get wooden furniture that has dovetail joints.

There was a time, when a dovetail offered the most effective jointing with wood. There was more contact between the wood on  both sides of the joint. This makes the joints more effectively connected and thus makes for more quality furniture. Though saying that a dovetail is the only way to go sounds good and makes many people feel like experts, technology just simply makes it so that that is not true.

Today, glues that are used to hold together wood in furniture are often stronger than the wood they are holding. I have personally, while managing a furniture store, witnessed a frame break before the glue holding it did. In fact, we could not get the glue to give at all. After that, I was convinced that not even nails were necessary. Still, most joints in any wood furniture will include both gluing and tacking of the wood.

Dovetails look nice and are strong. However, with today's technology, they are really no stronger than any other joint. If you want a dovetail joint on your furniture, good for you. I just wouldn't pay anything extra for it.

Hope this helps,
The Furniture Guy
