Buying Rustico

The southwestern look has become popular in furniture. Add to that the fact that it has become popular to get furniture with worn and distressed looks and you have the popularity of rustico furniture. When I was working the sales floor and managing a furniture showroom, I saw just how popular rustico furniture is. The only problem is that I also saw how often it was returned. Usually, the problem was nothing more than a customer who was not properly educated about the true nature of rustico style furniture.

Rustico furniture is essentially unfinished pine furniture. Usually, it is imported from Mexico or other parts of Latin America. It is made to look old and to look very worn.

If you are in the market for rustico style furniture, then you should make sure you understand what you are getting. Rustico WILL split even if it is not already. The hinges WILL squeek and rust. Additionally, every piece is unique. That means that when you buy from a store and get a piece from the warehouse, then it is very likely that your piece will be different than what you see on the showfloor. There will be pieces with splits and warps and bends on some that will not be on others.

Having said all of that, rustico furniture can be a wonderful investment. The cost is low, it lasts a long time since it is made of solid wood, and it offers a timeless look. Additionally, you will find that you do not have to worry about scratching it up or preventing warping in bad weather. Just make sure that you go into your rustico shopping experience with your eyes wide open; know your rustico and you will have better experience.
